Remarks
Club Concordia

Nagasaki Club
As early as the summer of 1861, a social organization called the Nagasaki Club had been formed by members (primarily British) of the foreign settlement. By January 1862, rules for the Club had been settled and by the end of the year, a permanent building for the Club had been erected at No. 31 Oura. The original trustees were W.J. Alt and H.M. Wright. In May 1863, Edward Harrison replaced Alt as trustee of the Nagasaki Club.

Rumors circulated in the spring of 1881 that the club would soon close, and, indeed, the building and its bowling alleys were sold at auction in June.
The Nagasaki Club reopened on November 1, 1881 in a new two-story building at No. 10 Oura under the supervision of Charles Sutton.

The Nagasaki Club was primarily a place for European and American residents of Nagasaki to meet and relax.

In August 1921 a celebration was held marking the 40th anniversary of the Nagasaki Club at its No. 10 Oura site.
In 1933 the club moved to No. 4 Minamiyamate, where it remained until its closure in 1941.

UNION CLUB
(English Club)

The Union Club was a social club established in Kobe. The original object was to establish an institution for the social intercourse of persons of all nationalities, and with this object a meeting was called on April 20, 1869, which was presided over by P. Rousset, the French Consul, who nominated J. J. Enslie, the British Vice-Consul, as temporary Chairman, and A. Ortmans, the Italian Consul, as secretary. A committee, including the two last-named with the addition of J. Wainwright, the Editor of the Hiogo News, was formed to organise a scheme of association, and this was brought before a meeting held on May 5th, when the following officers were appointed: J. J. Enslie, British Vice-Consul, President; P. Rousset, French Vice-Consul, Vice-President; Frank, Paul, U.S. Consul, Secretary; W. G. Johnson (of the Hiogo News), Assistant Secretary; T. N. Besier, Treasurer. The Executive Committee consisted of A. Ortmans, C. H. Ogston, G. Duplaquet, J. Wainwright, and R. D. Robison. The club was first established on Lot No. 31. Thsre was also included the private undertaking of S. Dutronquoy and contained bowling alleys and a billiard room for three tables. It was, however, only a temporary location for the club. A building commenced on the adjoining lot, No. 32, was said to be for the purposes of the Club, but if it was ever occupied it must have been for only a short time, as on the April 15, 1870, the Club took possession of premises erected on Lot 79 (Kyo-machi) by Messrs. Van der Vlies & Co. There now happened a curious incident. Prior to the formation of the Union Club the Germans had formed a club of their own, the Concordia Club.
Indeed it is worth mentioning that throughout their history the relations between the two Clubs were most cordial, the English Club, as it was called, having a number of German members and the Club Concordia a number of British members. It was now determined by the German community to erect the present brick building, designed by A. N. Hansell, on the west of the Recreation Ground. The new home of the Club was opened on November 11th, 1896. Prior to this the Kobe Club had erected (in 1890) the existing brick structure, also from the designs of A. N. Hansell, in substitution of the wooden buildings put up in 1869.
