1. French Military Mission
- A First French Military Mission headed by Colonel Chanoine began military training in November 1866 at the request and invitation of the Tokugawa administration. However, due to the decline of the former government, the military training by the French Mission was discontinued in March 1868, after only 15 months.

2. French Military Mission
The new Meiji Government declared on October 26, 1870 that the new Japanese Imperial Army should be organized according to the French model, while the Navy should follow the British model. The Japanese Ministry of War requested the French Ministry of War to dispatch a military mission. France finally agreed to this Japanese request despite the tough situation she was in after the defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. Consequently, on May 15, 1872, a Second French Military Mission of 16 members headed by Lieutenant Colonel Marquerie arrived at Yokohama, further members followed. Its members entered employment with the Ministry of Army, and the training of infantry, cavalry and artillery was soon started in Tokyo. The training by the Second Mission continued for 8 years until 1880. The achievement of the Second Mission was highly valued by the Japanese government, even in a period of pro-German tendencies. This appreciation extended to another French Mission.

General Remarks - Between the end of the First Military Mission (March 1868) and the beginning of the 2nd MM on May 15, 1872, France stationed a small military group to protect the French inhabitants. The military deployment was about from 1869 to 1871, the headquarters was located in the Homura Barracks. The Garrison Commander was Captain
N. Berge.
Further members of this detachment:
-
BOYER, H. L. -
CROZET, H. -
GAY DE TARADEL, Augustine -
HERAL, F. G. -
RECLUS, E. A. E. -
N. Berge.
Weitere Mitglieder der Militäreinheit:
-
BOYER, H. L. -
GAY DE TARADEL, Augustine -
HERAL, F. G. Remarks on Postal History - From the viewpoint of postal historians, there is a clear difference between the First and Second Missions. So far, no examples of letters from the members of the First Mission are known to exist. During the period of the First Mission (1866-1868) the French Yokohama Post Office was busily operating, but there is no trace of the First Mission members utilizing this post office, and the reason for this is also unknown. It is supposed that their letters were collectively and separately treated by the French Legation in a manner similar to diplomatic pouches.
By contrast, about 300 examples of letters from the members of the Second Mission sent through the post office are known to exist.
Ref.: Japanese Philately, Vol. 68, No. 4, August 2013, Whole No. 400
