Cliff House Hotel Cliff Field Hotel (1894 - 1898)
About the Cliff House Hotel, Nagasaki by Brian Burke-Gaffney
British ship captain Wilson Walker and his wife Charlotte moved to Nagasaki in 1893 with their six children and purchased the large house at No. 12 Minamiyamate. Wilson continued to work as a contract pilot for large passenger ships negotiating the treacherous Seto Inland Sea. In 1897, the couple purchased the hotel on the adjacent lot, No. 10 Minamiyamate, and opened a new establishment called the Cliff House Hotel. The facility consisted of two two-story buildings of wooden construction connected by a covered passage, one housing the hotel foyer, restaurant and billiard parlor, and the other rooms for guests. The buildings faced the harbor at the top of the tall stone embankment and enjoyed a panoramic view over the harbor. In early 1902, Wilson and Charlotte’s eldest son Wilson Walker Jr. returned to Nagasaki from England, where he had been studying at the Carlisle Grammar School, and took responsibility for the management of the hotel. In 1908, Wilson Jr. announced that he had fallen in love with a Japanese woman working in the Nagasaki entertainment district and that he wanted to marry her. When his father vehemently opposed the marriage, Wilson Jr. slipped out of Nagasaki with his fiancée and sailed to China. He eventually found employment with the Chinese Maritime Customs in Antung, Manchuria. In the wake of their son’s departure, Wilson and Charlotte decided to refurbish the Cliff House Hotel. They reopened the facility in March 1910. Wilson named himself manager, but it was Charlotte who took responsibility for all the daily duties. Wilson died on November 4, 1914. He had spent 46 of his 69 years in Japan. Newspapers in Japan and China responded with an effusion of tributes to the former master mariner. The author of his obituary in The Nagasaki Press wrote a biographical sketch that ran the length of the newspaper for two columns, expressing lament over the loss of one of the oldest foreign residents of the Far East and mentioning that “during his long connection with the Mitsubishi Steamship Company Captain Walker became intimately acquainted with many of the great Japanese of the Meiji Era and the leading foreign residents of the country.” The burial at Sakamoto International Cemetery was attended by a large number of Japanese and foreign friends. On January 3, 1919, during a lengthy stay with her daughter in Shanghai, Charlotte Walker sent a letter to Thomas Glover’s son Kuraba Tomisaburo asking for advice about selling both the family house and the former Cliff House Hotel. In his reply, Kuraba mentioned that several other choice properties in the foreign settlement had been sold recently to Japanese residents, and he promised to inform her about potential buyers. Charlotte placed an advertisement on the front page of the June 5, 1919 issue of The Nagasaki Press for the sale of both the Cliff House Hotel at No.10 Minamiyamate and the adjacent family residence at No.12 Minamiyamate. The tenders were opened in July but no offers were made. While the sale remained on hold, Charlotte gave the reins of the hotel to a Japanese entrepreneur named Y. Inuzuka. Inuzuka reopened it in January 1920 only to close it down again a month later, presumably unable to lift it out of debt. At one point the Nagasaki City authorities expressed interest in establishing an elementary school on the site, but the proposal fizzled under a cry of protest from local residents. Two Japanese physicians finally purchased both the house and the hotel in 1922 and converted them into a medical facility called the Tanaka and Amenomori Joint Hospital. Charlotte moved permanently to Shanghai after the sale of the property. In a later memoir, she commented that “Japan had become very expensive to live in and also rather quiet for my daughters.” However, it must have been an emotional farewell: she was leaving behind the grave of her husband, the familiar faces of her many Nagasaki friends, and countless reminders of her 42-year sojourn in Japan. Tanaka and Amenomori converted part of the former Cliff House Hotel into a rooming house. One of the last inhabitants prior to World War II was the well-known Nagasaki woodblock artist Tagawa Ken (1906-1967). In a postwar reminiscence, Tagawa remembered the old building as follows: There was a spacious courtyard separating the buildings, each of which had six rooms on two stories. I rented two rooms on the east side with old fashioned furniture. I was alone on the second story. A sculptor who made molds for bronze statues lived below me. A wide corridor connected the buildings, and the window of my room commanded a panoramic view of the Higashiyamate hillside. On the west side, the harbor was visible through the branches of a large camphor tree. Twice a week, the NYK steamer plying the Nagasaki-Shanghai route glided into the harbour with music playing across its decks. After World War II, the former Cliff House Hotel buildings were sold off and converted into a metal parts factory and tenement house. Allowed to fall into a dilapidated state, the buildings burned to the ground in a 1973 fire. All that remains today is a fragment of one of the hotel chimneys and the embankment wall supporting the lot.

Kuraba kept copies of his own letters separately from his incoming mail. Unfortunately, the latter cannot be found today, and so the content of Charlotte’s letter can only be surmised from Kuraba’s reply. 3 Charlotte Walker, “Fifty-Five Years in the Orient,” The Shanghai Woman, March 1934, p 19. 4 Tagawa Ken, Nagasaki no yōfū kenchiku (Nagasaki’s Western Architecture), Mingei, No.46, 1956, p 11. Nagasaki Hotel
- The Nagasaki Hotel was built in 1898 and heralded as one of the finest Western-style hotels in the Far East. At first the Nagasaki Hotel prospered but later suffered with the decline in visitors to Nagasaki in the wake of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05 and the economic depression of the early 1920's and finally closed in 1924. The building was demolished soon after.
